nature heals

March 23, 2020

in the past week or so since my last post several things have happened.

1. first robin song, a real morning song.

2. four or five ticks. a few days ago one fell off my left eyebrow onto the table as i typed.

3. our governor andrew cuomo is doing his damnedest in a frightening time.

4. no cases of covid-19 in our county. probably little or no testing in our county.

5. nell is growing like a weed.

6. social isolation not difficult here, the ignorance that sometimes accompanies it have long been a problem.

7. some people feel there’s no danger here in our isolation. i remind those i’ve conversed with that we share a long border (now closed) with ontario, including akwasasne, and that we have several prisons.

8. facing the inner demons isn’t easy, and i so desire to gather my adult chicks to my nest.

9. i miss my students. they had to leave, and may be in places that are hard for them to study remotely.

10. the vernal equinox happened.

11. my classes at maiwa and washi arts are postponed

home, tree cuddles rock, rock supports tree, interdependence

home, tree cuddles rock, rock supports tree, interdependence

i walked through the woods here last week, spending time learning the ridges and how this whole granite country slides to southwest, and this onceuponafarmstead must have been a horror to make a living from. even where there’s topsoil, there’s granite ridging and a multitude of springs. to make a garden spot required heavy machinery and much moving of sand and soils. but it is beautiful, the trees and rocks minding one another. on my walk i got to know the trees and the landshape and the little waters and even smaller british red coats.

40 years ago i collected a handful of these to make a lovely pink dye, a practice i would not repeat as i now know appropriate forest manners.

while harvesting empty cocoons feels like appropriate practice to me, i am more and more aware of just how heavy my footprints on this beautiful planet are. but i will spin this silk with care. i’m spinning a tale about it, too.

and we planted many seeds and there is delightful germination happening.

please be safe and smart and kind.
